The New World

Our voyage is over, but the work is just beginning...

After a long two months aboard the ship, we have finally landed. Our new home is called "Virginia" and it is in a brand new world. Since the moment we boarded the ship back in London, we have waited to see what our destination was like. Here is what we've encountered.

One of my favorite moments was listenting to Captain John Smith preach about the importance of hard work and determintation. He set down a rule that if a man didn't work, he wouldn't eat. Although it seemed harsh, it was necessary to create a good colony. Looking back, I am very glad he did that.

Welcome Class,

Above you just read a fictional journal entry from a Jamestown colonist.  This will be something you will be doing as we learn about the settlement of the New World.  You will get to experience what it was like for the English and Powhattans when they first encountered each other.  You will get to see how Captain John Smith may have saved the hopes of all future settlers.  And you will get to see why the Jamestown people survived, while 18 other colonies before them either crumbled, or disappeared!
